COAL GROVE — Gathered around the flagpole on a foggy morning Friday, the students and faculty of Dawson-Bryant Elementary School remembered Sept. 11 with a Patriot Day ceremony.

“We’ve done this the past few years,” Dawson-Bryant Elementary School principal Angie LaFon said.

LaFon began the ceremony with an introduction followed by the lowering of the flag by Boy Scouts and students Landon Davis and Tyler Nutter, a moment of silence, Davis and Nutter leading the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem by all.

Students involved in the ceremony were Mia Fields, Ellie Vaughn and Lexi Wood reading a Sept. 11 poem, Mary Beth Back, Sydney Fields, Mattie Hapney, Kaleigh Rowe and Kami Savino singing God Bless the U.S.A. and Jayce Edwards, Luke Jenkins and Landon Davis reading a poem titled “The American Hero.”

Lafon said she thinks the Patriot Day ceremony is very beneficial to the students.

“I think it’s important to teach the kids here at school what it means to be a good student and citizen,” she said. “I want them to learn that at school so they can take that out with them in the community.”
