PEDRO — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets had two game plans against the Rock Hill Redwomen.
They followed the plan by coach Rick Roach, They joked about their own plan.
Serious or not, the Lady Hornets were able to beat the Redwomen 53-39 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
“In the locker room after the game the girls told me they wanted to keep the game close to see how high my blood pressure would go,” said Roach with a laugh.
“We started off very sluggish. We allowed them to get back into the game during the second quarter.”
Emily Compliment had 18 points and three steals to lead the Lady Hornets (11-8, 6-6). Destiny Dolen finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, two assists and five steals.
Rock Hill (6-13, 2-10) was paced by Rileigh Morris with 10 points while Caitlin Meadows added eight points.
Bailee McKnight was 4-of-4 from the foul line and Dolen scored four points as Coal Grove took a 13-7 first quarter lead.
Rock Hill cut the deficit to 23-22 at the half as Morris scored six points and Jill Hairston had five points including a 3-point goal. Dolen scored six for Coal Grove.
“Offensively we could not get in any groove,” said Roach.
The Lady Hornets went up 36-32 after three quarters as Crum hit a pair of 3-pointers. Abbi Kline drained a couple of triples for the Redwomen and Morris had four points including a 3-pointer.
Compliment scored 10 points in the fourth quarter — she was 4-of-4 from the foul line — while the Lady Hornets converted 8-of-10 free throws.
“Through the whole game we continued to get to the basket and draw some fouls,” said Roach. “I felt we rebounded really well. Murphy did an outstanding job on the boards. Dolen almost had a double-double. She played a very good game”
Rock Hill was just 3-of-17 from the field in the fourth quarter.
On Monday, Coal Grove is at Chesapeake and Rock Hill hosts Portsmouth.
