Downtown tree was replanted at city garage around 25 years ago

The downtown Ironton Christmas tree set up at the Rotary Fountain has a bit more significance this year than usual.

Mike Pemberton, street superintendent for the city of Ironton, said that normally, the city accepts a donated tree for the area. However, this year, the tree was one that was pulled from the yard at the city garage.

“We had this tree at my department at the Ironton city garage,” he said. “We’re expanding the impound lot, which is where the tree was, and decided to use it for the city’s Christmas tree at the fountain.”

Pemberton added that the tree was one that was uprooted during a car accident on the Second Street overpass, but that he replanted it at the garage around 25 years ago.

“It has a little meaning to me,” he said.
