Essay contest winners announced
Four Lawrence County fourth graders were presented awards in the Lawrence County Museum’s annual essay contest on Sunday at the museum.
Coming in first place and winning $50 was Michael Edmonds, of Chesapeake Elementary School, who wrote about the Underground Railroad. Rylan Smith, of Dawson-Bryant Elementary, was the second place winner, and won $25 for his essay on the Waterloo Wonders.
The contest saw a tie for third place, with Seth Hamm, of Dawson-Bryant Elementary and Darin Jeffries, of Chesapeake Elementary, each winning $10 for their efforts.
Hamm wrote about the old Monitor School in Coal Grove, while Jeffries chose famous World War I flying ace and Ironton native William Lambert as his topic.
