Fall community education classes offered at OUS

Ohio University Southern is offering a variety of community education classes to the general public.

The classes are self-supporting, and the fees collected from Community Education cover instructional, administrative and overhead costs of the programs.

ACT Prep

Designed to focus on individual sections of the test, each day will cover a different topic.

Health and Fitness

All of the following health and fitness courses are designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a lasting interest in attaining and maintaining personal health and wellness throughout their lifetime. In addition, students will gain a working knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of the history, safety and etiquette of all of the following courses.

  • Kickboxing

Location: Ohio University Southern campus and Community Building.

Date/Time: 5:30-6:25 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 27-Dec. 15.

  • Yoga

Location: Ohio University Southern campus and Community Building.

Date/Time: Oct. 22-Dec. 15, 5:30-6:25 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  • Archery

Locations and Date/Time: Friday, Nov. 9, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Ohio University Southern campus. Saturday, Nov. 10, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. at the Vesuvius Longbow range (self drive). Saturday, Nov. 17, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. at the Vesuvius Longbow range (self drive).

Creative

 

  • Let’s Dine and Design Stained Glass!

Students will learn to design, cut, grind and solder stained glass, as well as each step in the process of stained glass design. Students will also be able to take their glass projects home.

Location: Ohio University Southern

Date/Time: Tuesdays, Sept. 25-Oct. 23, 7-9 p.m.

Cost: $129 (includes $50 supply fee, and students must register and pay by Sept. 21).

  • Painting 101

Designed for beginners who want to experience the joys of painting. Students will learn how to paint a landscape, and the supplies list will be given when registered.

Location: Ohio University Southern

Date/Time: Thursdays, Nov. 1-15, 7-9 p.m.

  • Fall Wreaths

Students will learn how to work with deco mesh to assemble and decorate a beautiful fall wreath.

Location: Ohio University Southern Caucus Room

Date/Time: Monday, Sept. 24, 6-8:30 p.m.

Cost: $24 plus a $7 supply fee (students must be registered by Sept. 17).

  • Christmas Wreaths

Students will learn how to create a Christmas wreath with ribbons, deco mesh and Christmas accents.

Date/Time: Monday, Nov. 5, 6-8:30 p.m.

Cost: $24 plus a $7 supply fee (students must be registered by Oct. 29).

  • Vinyl Designing

Students will learn about the different processes and functions of using vinyl to make your own custom vinyl designs on fabric. From computer to T-shirt and everything in between is covered in this course.

Location: Ohio University Southern Academic 214

Date/Time: Monday, Oct. 1 and Monday, Oct. 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Cost: $29 plus a $5 supply fee (students must bring their own shirt or cloth bag to work on).

 

Technology

 

  • Photography

An introduction to photography with a DSLR camera course, students will look at digital camera functions, such as shutter speed, mega-pixel counts, focal length of lenses and photographic imaging skills. Students will take their own photos using the different functions, as well as how to properly use the controls. Students need to bring their own DSLR cameras and camera manuals.

  • Editing/Restoring Photos

Students will learn basic photo editing skills and the software functions necessary to perform touch-up techniques, improve color and tone, modify the contrast and sharpness of images, cropping techniques, and other features to improve your images.

  • OUS Google 101

Students will learn about the free applications offered by Google through their Google accounts. The course will go over G-Mail, word processing, sheets, presentations, drawings and Google Drive.

  • Introductory Microsoft Excel

Students will learn how to create electronic spreadsheets, and discover how to set up your spreadsheet, use formulas, create charts, format, edit, print and use functions in an electronic spreadsheet.

  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel

Advance your Excel knowledge by organizing data and learning to work with formulas, lists and links between sheets, as well as working with charts and styles.

Dog Obedience

 

  • Dog Obedience- Puppy Kindergarten

The owner and puppy learn the basics of dog obedience at a more relaxed pace. Sit, stay, come, lie down and good manners are the focus of this puppy class. Because puppies have short attention spans, play and social interaction are important elements of this course. Positive reinforcement, praise and good parenting are emphasized.

  • Dob Obedience- Sub Novice

This is an on-leash course for owners to learn how to train dogs that are seven months or older. All of the basic commands are covered, and this course is based on positive reinforcement and working on getting your dog’s attention and trust. (Puppy Kindergarten is not required).

  • Dob Obedience Novice

This course moves forward in the obedience training to off-leash work done with all of the commands. The sub-novice course is required, or participants must have permission from the instructor. (Please do not bring the dog to the first session).

Interests

 

  • The Chemistry of Food

This course is designed to acquaint interested students with the relationship between food composition and the resulting properties of foods. Students of the course will be able to identify the food components and relate these components with function, nutrition and safety. In addition, students will also learn the connection between the food environment and the food chemistry inclusive of changes in temperature, pH, light and chemical bonding, as well as learn to integrate chemistry and biochemistry principles in real world food science.

  • Paranormal Phenomena and Local Mysteries

This course includes a guided discussion focused on popular facets of the paranormal field and local interests of a similar nature. It is intended to stimulate one’s own familiarity with current ideas in the research of fringe subjects. Students will also be introduced to new concepts that they ay not normally consider.

  • Underground Railroad

Ohio had the most active network of the Underground Railroad than any other state in the Union. Countless enslaved African-Americans first tasted freedom after crossing the Ohio River into Burlington and Ironton. This class will bring local history alive using primary sources, and will identify and give biographical sketches of the individuals of various ethnicities and religious beliefs who worked together in an informal network of safe houses and escape routes.

  • Disaster Preparedness

Students will learn skills and strategies applicable to real-world scenarios for actual disasters. Things that will be covered include what should go into an emergency survival kit, getting information without the Internet, contacting people without phone service, useful tools to have and necessary medical supplies.

  • Rules of the Road

Teaches fundamental concepts of investing and potential strategies to help build wealth.

  • Focus on Fixed Income

Explains the basics of fixed income investments, the seven characteristics of, the advantages of laddering, and how fixed income may be part of your investment strategy.

  • Foundations of Investing

Teaches rules of investing, including developing a strategy, choosing quality investments, diversifying portfolio, investing for the long term, and focusing on what you can control.

  • An Investor’s Tour of Mutual Funds

This course gives a detailed look at the features, benefits and risks associated with mutual funds, as well as a map to mutual fund selection.

Health Care Career

 

  • Clinical Medical Assistant Program

This program prepares students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, pharmacology and more. (Students will not earn Ohio University credit)

  • Medical Administrative Assistant Program

This course covers information on the medical assisting profession, interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management, and management of practice finances.
