Ashland in Motion event showcases biscuits and gravy

ASHLAND — Although the NFL season will be completed, a local competition will be heating up the following weekend as Ashland in Motion is set to host the second annual Gravy Bowl, a biscuit and gravy competition, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

The event will feature sample-sized biscuit and gravy dishes created by several local restaurants, community organizations and home cooks, with gravy entries being entered into three categories; sawmill gravy (meat gravy), country gravy (meatless gravy) and a freestyle category.

Also part of the event will be a brunch bar and live music by Moonshine Crossing and the Sugarbeats.

Ashland in Motion is currently accepting applications for teams or businesses interested in competing in the Gravy Bowl cook-off. The entry fee is $35 for initial entry and $10 for each additional entry. Biscuits will be provided.

Participants may compete in all three categories, and divisions include professional (“seasoned pro”), or amateur (“home cooking”). A panel will judge entries, and “Best of Show” winners will be selected from all three categories in each division. An overall “People’s Choice Award” winner will also be selected by event guests. The participating team that also displays the most spirit and best décor will be awarded the “Biscuit Blitz Award.”

Last year’s “People’s Choice Award” winner was Clark’s Pump-N-Shop, and winners in the professional division were Alma’s Italian; Ann Perkins and Clark’s Pump-N-Shop. Amateur division winners were Infusion Solutions, Build Ashland and Duffy Dyer Realty. Build Ashland also won last year’s “Biscuit Blitz Award.

General admission to the Gravy Bowl is open to the public, and sampling is redeemed through ticket purchase.

Tasting tickets may be purchased on-site the day of the event. Prices are $1 each or six for $5.
