GALLIPOLIS — The Fairland Lady Dragons shot so poorly they should have lost.
Should have, but didn’t.
The Lady Dragons were 16-of-58 from the field for 27.5 percent and only 3-of-23 from the 3-point line for 13 percent.
Despite their worst shooting performance of the season, the Lady Dragons rallied in the second half to beat the Gallipolis Blue Angels 43-35 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
The Blue Angels didn’t shoot much better. Gallipolis (5-12, 1-10) made 15-of-41 field goal attempts for 36.5 percent and hit 1-of-4 from behind the arc.
The game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter as Tomi Hinkle scored 4 points and Katie Brumfield hit a 3-pointer for Fairland while Gallipolis’ Maddy Petro scored 6 points.
Petro scored 6 more points in the second quarter as Gallipolis took an 18-17 halftime lead.
Brumfield had another trifecta for Fairland.
Hinkle scored 7 points and Jenna Stone had a 3-pointer as Fairland rallied to take a 32-25 lead.
The Lady Dragons (10-9, 8-3) outscored Gallipolis 11-8 in the fourth quarter as Hinkle scored 6 points. Fairland only converted 5-of-12 free throws.
Hinkle had a game-high 19 points to lead Fairland. Jessica King grabbed 9 rebounds, Stone and Hinkle 8 each and Emma Marshall 6.
Marshall also had 4 assists and 2 steals with Hinkle getting 3 steals.
Petro had 15 points and 9 rebounds and Alex Barnes 8 rebounds. Preslee Reed had 3 steals and 2 assists.
On Monday, Fairland visits Chesapeake and Gallipolis is at Portsmouth.
