WAVERLY — The See-saw Squad did it again.
The South Point Pointers built up a couple of double-digit leads and then had to hold on twice as they upset the North Adams Green Devils 67-66 to win the Division 3 sectional tournament on Friday.
“We kept our composure,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise. “We took good shots, we turned them over and got some steals and some layups.”
Chance Gunther scored 28 points, Nakyan Turner had 14 and Brody Blackwell hit four 3-pointers for 12 points as South Point (13-10) advanced to the district tournament.
Jayden Hester scored 19 points, Austin McCormick 18 and Cade Meade 11 to pace the Green Devils (16-8).
Gunther scored 11 points including a 3-pointer and two foul shots in the first quarter as South Point took a 20-9 lead.
Turner hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 more points to aid Gunther’s effort.
But the Pointers’ offense struggle in the second quarter as Meade and Hester combined for 10 points to get the Green Devils within 25-22 at the half.
The Pointers went back the other way offensively in the third quarter as they opened up a 49-36 lead.
Gunther hit two 3-pointers and scored 10 points, Blackwell drained a pair of triples, Darryl Taylor scored 4 points and Carmelo Sammons came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer in the quarter for the Pointers.
“Gunther and Blackwell really stepped up and we made some big plays,” said Wise. “Blackwell hit some big shots. Sammons hit a big 3 right at the end of the third quarter. Gunther probably played his best game.”
Hester had 5 points as he and Cameron Young each hit 3-pointers in the quarter.
McComick hit a 3-pointer and scored 11 points while Hester knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 7 points to rally the Green Devils in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Pointers 30-20.
But Gunther hit a 3-pointer and converted 4-of-6 at the foul line and Blackwell nailed two more triples as the Pointers held on for the win.
