HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — It’s time for that great-tasting food with the almost unpronouncable names. Kourambiethes. Kataifi. Moussaka. Spanakoptia. Dolmades.

That’s right it’s the 26th annual Greek Festival at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Huntington that started Friday and continues through 5 p.m. today

Food abounds. Downstairs are full meals like lamb dinner, Greek-style chicken dinner, stuffed grape leaves and Greek-style macaroni and cheese.

Outside there is lamb on a spit. A stand with gyro sandwiches, with or without feta cheese. And don’t forget all those pastries.

To get rid of any extra calories, visitors can watch authentic Greek dancers complete with costumes go through their strenuous paces at 1 and 3:30 p.m. In between there is a church tour of St. George’s with its many icons covering the Mediterranean blue walls of the sanctuary.

Sitting inside it’s hard to believe the city of Huntington is just outside the front door.

Parishioners call themselves “the direct spiritual descendants of those who first heard the ‘Good News’ proclaimed by the Apostles in Greece and Asia Minor,” the church says. “For more than 20 centuries we have sought to maintain the integrity of the Early Church’s faith and worship.”

This is the church’s only fund-raiser for the year and attracts non-stop crowds for the entire weekend.
