Despite a 13-day break due to a cancellation by Portsmouth West, the St. Joseph Flyers racked up three more wins during the past week and tied favored Lucasville Valley 0-0 Wednesday to remain unbeaten on the season with 10 wins.

Last Wednesday, the Flyers went on the road and knocked off New Boston 3-2.

After the Tigers took a 2-0 lead, the Flyers got within 2-1 just before the end of the first half on a goal by Payton Blair.

“We came back with more intensity in the second half,” said assistant coach Sissy Clyse.

Ian Simpson scored two second half goals to give the Flyers the lead and the win.

Goalie Joe “The Shoe” Unger had a strong game with 13 saves. Also turning in great defensive efforts were George McCown, Pat Gagai, Anthony Whaley and Joey Basedow.

Last Friday the Flyers traveled to Ohio Valley Christian and rolled to a 6-1 win over the Defenders.

The Flyers scored quickly on a goal by Blair off an assist by Sunni Clyse in the first minute of the game.

OVC came back to tie the game, but Blair came back with a goal and then Chad Harvey scored thanks to an assist by Caleb Blackburn and it was 3-1 at the break.

The Flyers controlled the second half with Blair scoring on a penalty kick, Simpson getting a goal from a deflection off the goalie, and Harvey scoring as Clyse had her second assist.

St. Joseph came right back with another 6-1 win on Monday over the Portsmouth Clay Panthers in a home game.

The Flyers used a makeshift lineup with Gagai out due to an injury. Harvey, normally a starting forward, played back at defense while Katie Schwab joining Simpson up top.

Clay took a 1-0 lead, but after a few minor adjustments the Flyers ran off six unanswered goals in the second half.

Blair, Harvey and freshman Mike Pina scored two goals each while Simpson had two assists and Levi Hopkins and Harvey had one each.

“Caleb Blackburn, Levi Hopkins, Sunni Clyse, and Payton Blair did a great job in the midfield and Ike Palmer joined the strong defensive effort,” said coach Clyse.

St. Joseph travels to South Point for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday.
