It was the calm before the storm.

For two innings, the St. Joseph Flyers’ offense was very quiet. Then came the third inning and the dam burst.

The Flyers scored 11 runs in the third inning and went on to rout the South Gallia Rebels 12-1 in five innings Monday.

“We got off to a slow start and they got the lead and it looked like one of those games,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant. “But we got some walks to get it going and when we put some hits behind them and just took off.”

The Flyers big inning helped T.J. Young pick up the win. Young allowed just one hit as he struck out eight and walked one.

“T.J. threw the ball very well. He was throwing strikes,” said Bryant.

The Rebels broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the third inning when Bryce Clary walked, stole second and Seth Hayner had a two-out single.

But then came the Flyers eruption.

Levi Hopkins singled to star the inning. Payton Blair, Anthony Whaley, Tanner Riley and Young all walked for two runs. Justin Mahlmeister singled home two runs.

Joseph Unger had a 2-run single, then got caught in a rundown but scored on a throwing error. Cody Blackburn walked, went to third base on a sacrifice by Spencer Schwab and Hopkins followed with an RBI single.

Blair singled and Whaley delivered a 2-run double. A wild pitch scored Whaley and then Riley walked, stole second and scored on a ground out by Young.

St. Joseph (7-0) added a run in the fourth as Unger doubled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Hopkins reached on an error.

Unger was 2-2 and Hopkins 2-3 for the Flyers who play at Beaver Eastern Tuesday.
