Huntington Mission hosting Easter meal

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Huntington City Mission will be serving an Easter banquet for those in the area without family or friends to share this holiday.

Carved ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, pasta salad, whipped potatoes, hot dinner rolls will be served with many desserts to top off the meal.

Do not hesitate to join us, as much preparation has gone into this feast. High-rise and efficiency apartment dwellers are welcome. The open dining will begin at noon until 3 p.m. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the afternoon.

SSU to screen ‘Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie’

PORTSMOUTH — Shawnee State University’s Office of Community Service will be hosting a screening of “Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Flohr Lecture Hall in Clark Memorial Library.

The screening is a documentary about the lives of Bigfoot researchers Dallas Gilbert and Wayne Burton of Portsmouth. Both Gilbert and Burton will be in attendance and will be available to answer questions and sign autographs.

The screening is free and open to the public. Food and monetary donations will be accepted to support local food pantries.

Dog Obedience

Puppy Kindergarten. New puppy? This class is designed for owners and their puppy’s ages 3-6 months.

Owners will learn the basics for simple obedience, housebreaking, crating, playing, grooming, and socialization of their new pet. Bring your puppy, vet papers.

Time: 6:30 – 7:30 pm

Fee: $65

Sub-Novice. (age 6 months.) In this class, owners will learn by doing hands-on work with their dog. You and your dog can learn the basics of proper canine conduct. Your dog will be on its way to becoming a well-behaved member of your family.

Time: 7:30 – 8:30 pm

Fee: $75

Novice. Are you interested in taking your dog a little further than just basic commands? Prerequisite for this class is Sub-novice dog obedience or permission from the instructor. You will go to the next level with your dog and fine-tune the basics learned in Sub-novice.

Time: 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Kitts Hill resident named as RCBI’s ‘Employee of Month’

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Production Engineer Kevin Euton of Kitts Hill, has been selected as Employee of the Month for March at the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing, RCBI Director and CEO Charlotte Weber announced.

Euton joined the RCBI staff two years ago. Prior to that he spent 22 years with Huntington Plating Inc., five years with D&E Tool Co., one year with McCorkle Machine & Engineering and one year with Abbott Tool & Die. He is a 1979 graduate of Coal Grove (Ohio) High School and Lawrence County Vocational School.

“Kevin combines a pleasant demeanor, extensive experience and a high level of machining skills to work very effectively with RCBI clients,” Ms. Weber said. “He’s a highly valuable member of our team.”

Euton and his wife, Teresa, have two sons, A.J. and Josh. His interests include hunting and making longbows and knives.

Holzer Heart Run setfor April 24

GALLIPOLIS — Holzer Heart Run and Walk is quickly approaching!

Several events are scheduled for April 24, 2010 including a 1 mile kid’s fun run, 10K run, 5K run, and 5K walk. There will be awards based on age groups, categories, and teams.

Each race will begin and end at Holzer Clinic Sycamore Branch in Gallipolis. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with events kicking off at 8 a.m.

SR 373 to be closed for culvert replacement

LAWRENCE COUNTY — State Route 373 in Lawrence County will be closed for two days next week in conjunction with a maintenance project by crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9.

On Monday and Tuesday, crews from ODOT’s Lawrence County Highway Maintenance Facility will be replacing four deteriorated culverts between the routes 1.5 and 3.0-mile markers, or Township Road 140W (Texas Hollow Road) and Dean Forest Road.

The closure will go into effect at approximately 8 a.m. Monday and continue through the end of the business day Tuesday, or approximately 4 p.m. While the route is closed, motorists will be detoured by way of S.R. 93.

‘Legendary Women’ highlight PAC’s Ky. Music Trail

ASHLAND, Ky. — Tickets go on sale to the public Monday for four legendary women, three must-see performances at this year’s Kentucky Music Trail which kicks off July 24 with Tanya Tucker.

Tucker is one of CMT’s 40 Greatest Women in Country Music and has sold more than 50 million records in the last three decades.

The second show features powerhouse vocalists duo, Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan on Aug. 28.

Recording Artist Pam Tillis has been a formidable force in country music since her first single hit the charts in 1990 with six No. 1 hits and has sold more than 6 million records. An accomplished songwriter, Tillis was one of the first women in Nashville to produce her own album, and she was awarded the coveted Female Vocalist of the Year by the CMA in 1994.

Lorrie Morgan was barely a teenager when she made her first major appearance in 1975 singing “Paper Roses” with her dad, country star George Morgan on the Grand Ole Opry. And at age 25, she was the youngest person ever to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Bringing her home, the Alltech Fortnight Festival presents Wynonna Judd in concert on Sept. 24. Judd is a 5-time Grammy Award winner who has had albums reach gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certification.

Pavement marking slated to begin

LAWRENCE COUNTY — A contract has been awarded for the application of pavement markings along various district routes. Contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will begin operations early next week, according to ODOT District 9 Deputy Director James A. Brushart.

Kneisel Contracting Corporation of Cincinnati, Ohio, was awarded a contract in the amount of $126,596.76 to apply fast-dry pavement markings to selected state and federal routes in all eight of the District 9 counties. District 9 includes Adams, Brown, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross and Scioto counties.

Tentatively scheduled to begin Monday, contractors will be applying auxiliary pavement markings on routes in Lawrence County as weather permits. Although an exact county-to-county schedule has yet to be determined, it is anticipated that operations will follow in Scioto, Jackson, Pike, Ross, Highland, Adams and Brown counties, respectively.

As this will be a rolling operation, motorists should encounter lane restrictions only in the immediate work zones. Throughout the project, traffic will be maintained with the use of arrow boards and flaggers as needed.

The completion date for the entire job is June 15.

Marshall set to build southern W.Va. clinic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marshall University is preparing to start construction of a health clinic for southern West Virginia.

The school says it’s scheduled a groundbreaking for the Rural Health & Clinical Education Center on Friday afternoon. The clinic is being built in conjunction with Chapmanville.

Marshall says the clinic will serve as a permanent home for the Coalfield Health Center and offer expanded services and training.

More than $2.7 million in funding for the clinic was secured by Sen. Robert C. Byrd.
