‘Where the Wild Things Are’ showing at library

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is hosting two showings next week of the children’s movie, “Where the Wild Things Are.”

The movie, an adaption of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s story, will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave.

It will also be the feature at Second Saturday Screenings at Summit, at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13.

The Summit Branch is located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.

Admission is free and some refreshments are provided.

“Where the Wild Things Are” tells the story of Max, a disobedient little boy who is sent to bed without his supper and proceeds to create his own world — a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.

Other upcoming movies at the Library include: ““Cirque DuFreak: The Vampire’s Assistant” on March 17 at Summit; and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” on March 27 at Main.

Outside groups can host movie showings at either the Main or Summit branches, using the library’s license.

Boating classes offered March 13

PORTSMOUTH — Ohio’s mandatory education law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1982 who operates a vessel powered by more than 10 horsepower to successfully complete a boating education course or a proficiency test.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Watercraft is offering the Ohio Boating Education Course at Shawnee State Park Marina in Scioto County on Saturday, March 13 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Topics covered in this course include: required equipment, safe boating practices, Ohio Boating Laws, rules of the road, aids to navigation, and commercial traffic. The cost of this course is $5 per person.

Anyone interested in attending either the Ohio Boating Education Course or the Proficiency Testing must register by calling the Portsmouth Office of the Division of Watercraft at 740-353-7668, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Teen program all about chocolate

Staff will be making chocolate goodies at Briggs Library including no bake cookies, puppy chow, and chocolate mint mountains. 

All materials will be provided.  Please sign up at your local library branch. 

This is for teens 12-18.  Bring some friends and something to drink.

United Way shows appreciation

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — United Way of the River Cities will host the Annual “Celebration of Excellence”

on Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 5pm to 7pm. This event provides the United Way (UWRC) the opportunity to say “thank you” to the many individuals and organizations that supported UWRC in 2009 in its work to advance the common good.

“Although we did not meet our 2009 fundraising goal, thanks to generous community members we raised $1,116,541 or 79.7 percent of that goal,” said Cassey Bowden, Director of Resource Development & Marketing, United Way of the River Cities.

“Economic conditions created some challenges for us this year, however we continue to move forward with our work in the areas of education, income and health.”
