PEDRO — It was a lesson in passive aggressive.

The Chesapeake Lady Panthers were passive while the Portsmouth West Lady Senators were aggressive in the Division III sectional tournament Saturday at Rock Hill High School.

The different approaches explained why West beat the Lady Panthers 40-21.

“They were the aggressors,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball. “We felt our way around early and West was playing hard. Once we started to play loose, it was too late.”

Chesapeake was just 10-of-39 from the field for 25.6 percent and turned the ball over 19 times. Only three of the nine players who played scored including Amanda Ruffner who had 13 points.

Also, Chesapeake was without junior point guard and three-year starter Sarah Mayo who was out with an illness.

“We could never get into our half-court offense. We were out of sync the whole game,” said Ball.

West (10-11) was led by Christin Graff with 12 points. Taylor Newman had 9 points and 10 rebounds while Tori Leader had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

The Lady Senators set the tone by taking a 10-0 lead to start the game. Chesapeake didn’t score until Ruffner hit a 10-footer at the 4:54 mark.

Ruffner hit a baseline jumper with 7:21 on the second quarter clock, but West went on a 6-0 run and Chesapeake didn’t score again until Kimmie Bennett hit a short jumper with 2:41 left in the half.

Chesapeake didn’t score again and trailed 24-10 at the half.

The third quarter was a struggle for both teams as West outscored Chesapeake 6-2 and the Lady Senators had a comfortable 30-12 lead.
