Annual cleanup set for Derby Day

The Great American Cleanup through Keep America Beautiful will bring out 1,072 volunteers on Saturday, May 4, to pick up trash through Lawrence County.

At its Thursday meeting Lawrence County Commissioners heard a report from Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste District director Dan Palmer about the upcoming event.

The cleanup begins at 8 a.m. with currently 53 groups signed up to go around the county. The largest group so far is 140 students from South Point High School who will join in.

Glad has provided 2,700 bags for the event and Nestle’s is offering 720 coupons for bottled water. Through the local Dow Chemical plant, the Dow Chemical Foundation has made a $2,000 donation to the effort.

Sixty rolloff containers will be provided by the townships of Union, Rome, Fayette, Perry, Lawrence and Elizabeth and the village of Proctorville. Last year rolloffs collected 384 tons of garbage.

On April 27 will the countywide drug take back at Ironton Hills and May 18 will be the document shredding, also at the Ironton Hills.
