Boat ramp fee dropped at W.Va.’s R.D. Bailey Lake

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will no longer charge a fee for the use of the boat ramp at R.D. Bailey Lake.

The Corps didn’t give a reason for the move in a news release Wednesday. It says camping and visitor fees at the Guyandotte Campground and all reservation fees for group picnic shelters on the lake still apply.

Annual day use passes will continue to be honored at other lakes nationwide where the Corps charges fees for the use of boat ramps and beaches.

R.D. Bailey Lake is located on the Guyandotte River in Wyoming and Mingo counties, about 3 miles east of the town of Justice.

 

‘Story Lady’ returns for BCPL program

ASHLAND, Ky. — The “Story Lady” from Boyd County Public Library will return to the First Friday events in downtown Ashland this Friday.

BCPL will also host the monthly Pictures in the Park program that day, at dark just outside the Main Branch on Central Avenue.

The Story Lady at First Friday will be at 6 p.m. at the Highlands Museum & Discovery Center, 1620 Winchester Ave. Admission to the first floor of the museum will be free that evening, so families can stay and visit the displays and exhibits.

The program is for all ages of children, and will include stories and a craft.

At dark, around 9:30 p.m., “The Smurfs” will be shown on a large outdoor screen in the grassy area just outside the main branch. The movie is free, and snacks are provided. Those who attend should bring their own chairs and blankets.

The Story Lady and Pictures in the Park will return for First Fridays on July 5 and Aug. 2.

WNF encourages weekend of outside play

NELSONVILLE — It’s a weekend of outdoor fun on the Wayne National Forest Athens Ranger District-Marietta Unit starting on the evening of Friday and ending Sunday morning.

Starting Friday at 6 p.m., there will be a hot dog roast and horse and buggy hayride at Lamping Homestead in Monroe County. At 9 p.m., enjoy a night sky viewing aided by telescopes at one of the darkest spots in Ohio.

On Saturday starting at 9 a.m., the Leith Run Recreation Area (located north of Marietta on the Ohio River Scenic Byway) will be the center of most of the day’s activities. U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson will be on-hand to kick off GO Day.

Daytime activities will include fishing, archery, orienteering, water safety, mountain bike skills (bring a helmet and bike), and disc golf. At the river shelter, there will be lectures about local land and water critters, touch live reptiles, and watch a raptor demonstration. Lunch will be provided to participants. From 2-4 p.m., Kinderhook Horse Trailhead will feature horseback rides. Saturday evening at 5 p.m., enjoy a chicken dinner and bluegrass music, and a campfire complete with storytelling back at Leith Run.

The weekend will conclude with a birding hike Sunday morning at 9 a.m. (bring binoculars).
