KDMC mobile mammography unit to visit Proctorville

PROCTORVILLE — King’s Daughters Mobile Mammography Unit will be in Proctorville on Monday, July 8 performing screening mammograms.

The unit will be at King’s Daughters Medical Specialties, 6276 State Route 7, next to Kroger, beginning at 9 a.m. Testing is performed by appointment. To schedule, please call (606) 408-2742 or toll free 1-877-304-1935. A physician order is not required.

Women 40 and older should have a screening mammogram each year, according to the American Cancer Society. Regular screening can detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable.

All tests are performed by specially trained mammography technologists using digital equipment, which results in less radiation exposure.

Senator meets with SPHS student

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) met with Lawrence County high school student Hunter Hall of South Point. Hall was selected to participate in the Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives Youth Tour.

“Ohio’s schools, like those in Lawrence County, equip our future generation of leaders with the skills they will need to succeed in the future” Sen. Brown said. “Hunter should be proud of his academic achievements and his knowledge of rural cooperatives. I have no doubt that he has a bright future ahead.”

Since the 1970s, Ohio rural cooperatives have sent 35-45 students — all cooperatives members and all rising juniors or seniors — to Washington, D.C. to learn about the capitol, meet their state delegations, and learn more about electric co-ops. Students are selected based on their academic record, letters of recommendation, and a competitive exam testing their knowledge of rural cooperatives.

 

Scioto County to hold butterfly count

The 22nd annual Shawnee State Park and Forest butterfly count will be Sunday, June 30. Participants should meet at Shawnee State Park Lodge parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Good walking shoes and layered clothes are suggested. Bring a packed lunch and drinking water.

A field guide and binoculars will come in handy although not required. Nets are permitted for catch and release only. Expert or novice, all are welcome. Take this opportunity to learn more about these colorful graceful creatures.

Last year participants counted 48 species and 995 individual butterflies inhabiting this 15 mile diameter circle within Shawnee Park and Forest. In order to cover this large area in a short time we will separate into groups each covering a particular territory. Maps will be provided.
