WILLOW WOOD — The Symmes Valley Vikings decided to have a block party.
Using a strong blocking effort by the entire team, the Vikings beat the Green Bobcats 49-6 Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“Our offensive line and our backs had a very good, overall team game. Everyone blocked well, not just the linemen,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.
“Our kids came out and did what they needed to do. We’re very pleased with their effort against a very scrappy team like Green.”
The blocking performance enabled the Vikings to run 43 times for 387 yards. Payton Hayes ran seven times for 105 yards, Dustin Holbrook carried seven times for 83 yards, Tyler Rowe had five carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns, and Tanner Mays rushed four times for 53 yards and three scores.
The Vikings (4-2, 1-0) took command early as they jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead.
Rowe recovered a fumble at the Green 31 on the first series of the game. Rowe scored moments later on a 3-yard run and Lane Wilson’s conversion kick made it 7-0.
Tyler Dement then forced a fumble and the Vikings recovered on the next series. Mays scored on a 25-yard scamper and it was 14-0 with 7:51 on the clock.
Symmes Valley forced a punt and then drove 81 yards in four plays. Holbrook’s 43-yard run sparked the drive and Mays went 17 yards for the score with 5:15 left in the quarter.
Brandon Craft came up with an interception that set up a 5-yard scoring run by Mays and the lead was 28-0 with just nine seconds on the clock.
The Vikings went up 35-0 with 9:52 left in the half when Rowe capped a 51-yard, three-play drive with a 9-yard run. Hayes had a 38-yard jaunt to key the quick drive.
The Vikings went on a 68-yard, 7-play drive to begin the second half with Holbrook running the final 2 yards. Ariel Brumfield kicked the extra point with 7:48 on the clock.
With the kick, Brumfield became the first known female player to score a point in a varsity football game in Lawrence County history.
Craft’s second interception of the game led to a 5-yard scoring run by Cory Thacker with 35 seconds to play in the third quarter. Tyler Ferguson kicked the conversion and it was 49-0.
Green (2-4, 0-1) avoided the shutout when Mark Allen scored on a 5-yard run with 4:02 left to cap a 65-yard, 10-play march.
Trent Marcum ran 11 times for 80 yards to lead the Green offense.
