Three of the four people elected to Ironton City Council on Tuesday have been there before.

Incumbents Beth Rist and Dave Frazer, who won as a write-in candidate, will both begin serving second terms on council on Jan. 1.

Former Mayor of Ironton and longtime council member Bob Cleary returns to the city’s governing body after changes in Ohio’s Public Employee Retirement System forced him to resign from council last December.

Craig Harvey will join council as its only newcomer and his 966 votes was the highest of all candidates.

“I want to represent the people of Ironton,” he said. “It’s humbling to know the people of Ironton want me to serve them. I will do my best.”

Cleary garnered the second-most votes with 894 and he admits his experience allows him to add a lot to the council.

“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “I had to quit last December and I have really missed it. I saw a chance to get back on council and I am looking forward to getting back in the swing of things, serving the people of Ironton and doing what’s best for the city.

Cleary served the city in one capacity or another for 23 years; six years as mayor and 17 years on council, eight of which were as vice mayor.

“We have a tough year ahead of us,” he said. “We have to work on a new budget and I just have to see where we are. I am ready for the challenge.”

Rist was the third-highest vote getter with 757 and she is optimistic about beginning her second term.

“I’m looking forward to working with Craig and I’m glad to have Bob back,” she said. “I’m looking forward to another term.”

Frazer defeated fellow write-in candidate Jerry Brownstead 286 to 114 to complete the four members elected on Tuesday. Calls to Frazer were not returned as of press time.
