St. Mary’s to provide low-cost blood profiles

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — For the entire month of January, St. Mary’s Medical Center will offer complete blood profiles for the low price of $24.

The special price is in honor of the 90th anniversary of St. Mary’s founding in 1924.

Blood profiles may be purchased at St. Mary’s Outpatient Center Monday through Friday from 7 to 10 a.m. or at St. Mary’s Medical Campus laboratory in Ironton, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lab work should be performed while fasting.

Blood profiles include 29 different tests, including glucose, cholesterol and calcium.

KDMC welcomes general surgeon Kevin Miller, M.D.

ASHLAND, Ky. — King’s Daughters Medical Center welcomes general surgeon Kevin Miller, M.D., to its team of physicians. A Kentucky native, Miller’s practice includes general surgery, endoscopy and wound care. He is also experienced with the da Vinci minimally invasive surgical system.

Miller earned his medical degree from the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, Lexington, Ky. He completed residency at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. Miller is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

General surgeons specialize in surgical treatment of diseases affecting the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. They also perform surgeries for diseases of the skin, breast, soft tissue and hernias.

International film festival scheduled

PORTSMOUTH — This year the International Film Festival at Shawnee State University begins with “Viridiana” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27 at the Flohr Lecture Hall in the Clark Memorial Library.

The film is set in Spain and the Spanish government suppressed it on the grounds of blasphemy and obscenity.

The second film scheduled is “Black Orpheus” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 set in Brazil. Hosting the film is Priscilla Santos, a Brazilian student at SSU.

The third film from Germany is on Thursday, Jan. 30. “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul” is about a lonely German cleaning woman who has a love affair with a much younger Moroccan mechanic and marries him.

SSU Assistant Professor Tom Piontek, Ph.D., who is from Germany, will host the film.

The last film, “Chungking Express” from China will be shown on Friday, Jan. 31. It’s about two love-struck cops who have broken up with their girlfriends.
