In a tough economy, every dollar, even every cent, counts. That’s why understanding how to manage money can be vital.

To provide that knowledge Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Burcham is planning a series of seminars in partnership with the Briggs Lawrence County Library on financial literacy.

“There will be 12 different topics,” Burcham said. “Some are for seniors, some for adults, and some for teens or young adults. There’s moms and dads who are giving teens $20 or $30. They don’t always recognized how long it took mom and dad to earn that $20 or $30.”

Courses will include banking basics, budgeting, scams, teens and money, buying a house, and first job. The free classes will be a combination of discussion by experts in the field and workbooks.

“We have a number of people who will be coming and bringing their experience,” he said.

Sessions will be offered at the Ironton, South Point, Chesapeake and Proctorville branches and occasionally at the Lawrence County Courthouse.

“Each branch will have the choice on choosing what it wants to have offered,” the treasurer said.

Whether pre-registration is required will be up to the individual branches.

Classes are expected to start at the end of this month and early May and last through the summer.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a number of years,” Burcham said. “(Former Ohio State Treasurer) Richard Cordray did this on the state level.”
