Former AD pleads

guilty to stealing

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A former Northern Kentucky University athletic director has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $300,000 from the school.

Attorney General Jack Conway says Scott Eaton pleaded guilty to a theft charge Thursday in Campbell Circuit Court.

Conway called Eaton’s behavior “unconscionable” and says the 50-year-old agreed to serve the maximum term of 10 years in prison and repay $311,215 to the school.

Eaton was fired by the college’s president last year over improper relationships with female employees and a student.

Prosecutors say Eaton used his university-issued credit card to buy gift cards used to purchase items for his personal use.

 

Puig back on field

after getting threats

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Yasiel Puig believes he has the support system from his Los Angeles Dodgers teammates and the club to keep his focus on baseball despite challenges off the field.

Puig returned to the starting lineup in right field for Thursday’s series finale against the Giants amid news reports that smugglers who helped him defect from Cuba threatened his life.

While Puig can’t address the details specifically because of a pending legal case, he said he will focus on baseball and on helping the defending NL West champion Dodgers keep winning.

 

Kentucky’s Young

to enter NBA draft

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky guard James Young has announced that he will enter the NBA draft, becoming the first of the Wildcats’ heralded freshmen to turn pro.

The 6-foot-6 Young led Kentucky with 82 3-pointers last season. He was one of six high school All-American recruits on a Wildcats squad that began the season No. 1 with expectations of winning the NCAA championship. His 43 percent shooting from long range in the tournament helped Kentucky reach the final before it lost 60-54 to Connecticut last week. He averaged 14.3 points.

Projected as a first-round selection, Young said in a statement Thursday that he treasured his season at Kentucky “but I feel that I’m ready to take the next step to the NBA.”

 

Blue Devils’ Parker

will jump to NBA

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke freshman Jabari Parker is entering the NBA draft, and there’s a strong chance he’ll be the No. 1 pick.

The 6-foot-8 All-American forward was the highest-scoring freshman in Duke history. He was also the first freshman to lead the Blue Devils in scoring and rebounding and the first freshman in three decades to be selected team MVP.

Parker led the Atlantic Coast Conference with an average of 8.7 rebounds and his 19.1 points were second only to North Carolina State’s T.J. Warren, who entered the NBA draft last week.

 

McNabb spends day

in jail for DUI arrest

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb has been released from an Arizona jail after serving a one-day sentence for a DUI arrest late last year.

Records released by West Mesa Justice Court show the 37-year-old McNabb served his time Wednesday and was released Thursday morning.

McNabb was arrested Dec. 15 on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. He pleaded guilty on March 27 and nine days of his sentence was suspended.

McNabb played 13 years in the NFL after being drafted with the second overall pick in 1999.

 

Doss arrested for

disorderly conduct

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police have arrested Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tandon Doss on a disorderly conduct charge, but he will not be prosecuted.

A police report says the 24-year-old Doss was “out of control” and arrested during a disturbance with another man Wednesday afternoon. The report provided no additional details on the incident. Police spokesman Sgt. Kendale Adams said he also had no details.

Adams said the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office declined to file charges.

 

Seattle’s QB Choi

banned for 50 games

NEW YORK (AP) — Seattle Mariners first baseman Ji-Man Choi has been suspended for 50 games following a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance.

The urine sample was collected from Choi before March 28, when Major League Baseball and the players’ union increased the penalty for a first testing violation for PEDs to 80 games.

MLB said Thursday that Choi tested positive for methandienone, a controlled substance popular with bodybuilders.

The 22-year-old Choi was hitting .394 at Triple-A Tacoma with one homer and five RBIs.

Choi became the third player suspended this year under the big league program following Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and Rays pitcher Alex Colome.

“I do not know what I could have taken that caused me to test positive,” Choi said in a statement issued by the union. “However, I also understand that without an explanation I must serve a suspension and I accept that.”

Seattle said it was “disappointed.”
