PROCTORVILLE — A worker killed at the site of repair work at the Indian Guyan Bridge has been identified.

The body of Bradley Jenkins, 45, of Otway, was recovered at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday following a mid-morning accident at the bridge site, according to Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said.

Originally a Portsmouth dive team arrived on the scene at about 2:15 p.m. to recover the body and worked until about 9 p.m. with no success.

“All efforts to free the man with the divers were unsuccessful,” Lawless said. “He was wedged in so tight they couldn’t get to him. Then the backhoes had to start digging.”

Members of the construction crew working on the project freed the body of their co-worker about an hour later.

The accident happened at about 11:40 a.m. Thursday when the worker was under the bridge that is being replaced by Complete Construction of Columbus. Two pits under the bridge had been dug. One was 35 feet deep and the other was 12 feet deep.

“The worker was on the other side of the pit and the ground gave way and he fell into the hole and debris fell in around him,” Lawless said.

Complete Construction had contracted with the Ohio Department of Transportation to replace the bridge.

State Route 7 was temporarily shut down to allow officials to get equipment on site.

OSHA is now on the scene to conduct an investigation.
