COAL GROVE — If everything goes according to plan, the Dawson-Bryant marching band will perform at Disney World this fall.

To aid in the effort the band boosters and band director will have the inaugural Beans and Bluegrass dinner at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Dawson-Bryant High School.

“There are several people among the collective group of boosters and band members who play bluegrass music,” Patricia Moore, intervention specialist at Dawson-Bryant, said. “This dinner was the idea of (band director) Thomas Zerkle.”

Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door the day of the dinner. All proceeds benefit the band’s trip to Disney World.

Every three years the marching band students are eligible to take the Disney trip. Zerkle offers the students this opportunity as a reward for their hard work throughout the years.

While at Disney next November, the students will participate in an instrumental music clinic.

The clinic covers one Disney medley piece, played back with Disney animation clips, much like a movie trailer. A Disney character makes an appearance at the end of the workshop to thank the students for their work and give participating groups a workshop DVD of their work.

“The band will be part of a workshop that is a mini movie,” Moore said. “It’s a really great opportunity.”

Local bluegrass groups will be playing throughout the evening and the Wizards of Dance Cloggers will also perform.
