Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War is the theme of classes this month at the Briggs Lawrence County Library.

Starting on Monday, Lori Shafer, adult services librarian, will give three classes on making church dolls which are small dolls made out of handkerchiefs.

“The dolls were given to kids to keep them quiet in church,” Shafer said. “At that time a church service was very long and if they would drop them, the dolls wouldn’t make any noise.”

Just by twisting in knots, the cloth can be turned into a doll.

“You just knot and make the doll, then decorate it with fabric markers,” Shafer said.

Classes will be at 6 p.m. Monday at South Point branch, 6 p.m. on June 21 at Proctorville and 6 p.m. at Ironton. Materials will be supplied, but registration is requested.

Another Civil War-themed class will be candle dipping where participants can learn to make their own candles.

“In the Civil War days they had to dip their own candles and you can make long or short candles,” said Amy Ward, Briggs librarian who will be conducting those classes. “You melt your wax and dip the wick in the hot wax and then cold water. It is a back and forth process until you get the thickness.”

Classes are 1 p.m. on June 11 at Ironton, at 2 p.m. June 16 at South Point, at 2 p.m. June 23 at Proctorville and at 1:30 p.m. June 25 at Chesapeake.

Supplies will be provided but participants are advised to wear old clothes or bring an apron.

On June 28 at the Ironton branch “Gone With the Wind” fans can meet for a special showing of the iconic movie starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. Viewers are asked to bring a lunch. During intermission, viewers can paint specially made grass fans. The movie starts at noon and lasts until 4 p.m.
