The weeklong celebration of the first 200 years of First Baptist Church of Ironton wrapped up with a step back in time.

The church’s Faith and Fitness Center was turned into an old-fashioned children’s festival with a fish bowl toss, spill the milk game with milk bottles carved out of wood and a shooting gallery with squirt guns as the messy weapon.

Every 10 minutes or so pastor Eric Barnes called for some kind of relay race whether it was the wheelbarrow or three-legged race with participants lying up to show off their prowess.

Concessions of cotton candy and popcorn were served at the fitness center preceded by a hot dog dinner in the church’s fellowship hall.

“This week has been great,” Barnes said. “Everything has been super well-received.”

The week started with descendants of the church’s founder, the Rev. John Lee, as guests at the Sunday worship service. Throughout the week were various events including a church supper, a concert and an historic re-enactment.

At today’s worship service Barnes said he would preach on how to take the past and use it to direct the church’s future.

“What will be our calling for the days ahead,” he said.
