CG girls top Devils; Fairland gets win

FLATWOODS, Ky. — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets opened the volleyball season with a five-set win over the Russell Lady Red Devils.

Coal Grove won 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 17-25 and15-12 in the tiebreaker.

“This group of ladies left it all out on the floor,” said Coal Grove coach Tricia Damron. “Team work brought the win home last night.”

Leslie Mulkey played well at the net as she led the Lady Hornets with seven blocks and 13 kills. Racheal Webb had 16 points with most of her points in the critical tiebreaker set.

Brooke Blackeman had 10 points in the win.

Coal Grove hosts Chesapeake on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Lady Dragons win

PROCTORVILLE — The Fairland Lady Dragons opened the volleyball season with a straight sets win over the Minford Lady Falcons.

Fairland swept the mach 25-10, 25-20 and 25-19.

Jenna Fulks and Nicole Wagner scored 17 points each to lead Fairland. Kelsey Riley added six kills.

In the reserve match, Fairland won 22-25, 25-17 and 25-10 as Sam Mason got 16 points.

The Lady Dragons hosts Vinton County at 11 a.m. Saturday.
