Court records show two instances of domestic violence

PEDRO — A Rock Hill teacher and football coach’s future remains uncertain following two domestic violence incidents in which he allegedly threatened to kill his wife and children.

Michael Blagg, an eighth-grade math teacher at Rock Hill Middle School who was also the head coach of the Rock Hill Junior High and defensive coordinator for the high school football teams at the time, pleaded guilty to two domestic violence charges last month in Ironton Municipal Court.

Court records show Blagg was sentenced to 180 days in jail, one year of probation and ordered to pay a $500 fine. Another 30-day sentence was suspended.

Blagg’s attorney, Scott Evans, said there has been no change in the terms of his client’s sentence.

Blagg has been a teacher in the Rock Hill district since August 1998. He has been replaced by a substitute and both the school district and the Ohio Department of Education are conducting independent investigations, according to Superintendent Wes Hairston.

“(Michael Blagg) has a very good work record here,” Hairston said. “He is a well-respected teacher and coach. I will never defend what he has done, but his work record here is impeccable.”

Hairston said the district’s Board of Education is expected to discuss Blagg’s future employment at its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 20.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Blagg’s residence on Oct. 19 and Oct. 29 for alleged domestic violence incidents, according to sheriff’s office reports.

Michael Blagg was arrested on a charge of domestic violence and taken to jail, according to the report of the Oct. 19 incident. The report from the incident states Blagg’s wife told deputies her husband threatened to kill her.

In the Oct. 29 sheriff’s office report, Blagg’s wife, Melissa, alleged her husband physically attacked her and threatened to kill their children.

Michael Blagg was again arrested for domestic violence as well as violating a protective order.
