Coal Grove uses strong finish to beat Rock Hill

PEDRO — The Coal Grove Hornets know how to finish strong.

The Hornets scored as many points in the fourth quarter as they did in the second and third quarters combined en route to a 52-38 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Rock Hill Redmen on Friday.

Austen Pleasants scored 14 points while Sean Paulus and Travis Carey added 10 points each for the Hornets (9-8, 5-4).

Austin Collins had a game-high 15 points for the Redmen (6-14, 1-9). Austin Barcus added 7 points.

Carey scored 5 points and all five starters scored in the first quarter as Coal Grove jumped out to a 14-7 lead.

The Redmen were 5-of-9 from the line in the second quarter as each team scored 9 points and the Hornets were up 23-16 at the half.

Nathan Turvey scored all 5 of his points including a 3-pointer and Tim Adkins had 4 points as the Redmen cut the deficit to 33-30 at the end of the third quarter.

But the Hornets held Rock Hill to just 8 points in the fourth quarter while Pleasants scored 8 points and Joe Akers 5 more and Coal Grove outscored the Redmen 19-8 to win going away.

On Tuesday, Coal Grove hosts Wesley Christian and Rock Hill entertains Symmes Valley.
