In addition to the South Point and Dawson-Bryant High School bands, the bands at Chesapeake and Rock Hill also received superior ratings at this year’s state finals competition.

“It’s wonderful. The kids worked hard all season,” Rhonda Pemberton, assistant band director at Rock Hill, said. “Every week they’ve changed something, but they’re always making forward progress. We have middle school and high school students, so it’s a pretty significant thing for the band.”

This marked the 28th year the Rock Hill High School band has made it to the state finals, which is a school record.

For Chesapeake, this is the ninth straight year the band has made the state finals and the third year that it received superior ratings.

“The Chesapeake community is excited and proud of our band students and their success,” Chesapeake superintendent Jerry McConnell said.

Chespeake band director Chris Wyscarver said he is proud of all the work that his band put in to reach the accomplishment.

“The kids worked really hard this year and kept a common goal in mind,” he said. “I’m really glad to see their hard work has paid off.

Rock Hill superintendent Wes Hairston was not available for comment by presstime.
