PROCTORVILLE — The Sybene/Chesapeake Senior Center hosted one of its largest events of the year on Friday.

A Christmas dinner took place at First Baptist Church in Proctorville to accommodate the larger crowd size for the holidays, director Darlene Green said.

She said up to 150 seniors were expected to come and enjoy the meal, including ham, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, deserts and more, prepared by volunteers.

She said some of the food came from donations, while some was purchased by the center.

Pre-dinner entertainment was provided by local singer Carlo Leep, who sang Christmas carols and Elvis Presley songs for the crowd. Green said Leep has helped the senior center before, painting the windows at their Chesapeake location.

Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes was on hand for the holiday event.

“I’m a big supporter of the seniors, and I always come to their events,” he said. “The county commission played a big part in getting the senior center started.”

Green said beginning in January, the senior center will host its monthly “Our Day” dinners, on the last Friday of the month, at the church, rather than at the senior center in Chesapeake.

“We outgrew our trailer and it was dangerous to have so many people for meals in there,” she said. “The church has been very open to allowing us to use their space.”
