Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s hopes for a home state win to boost his chances in the Republican presidential race are looking brighter.

Kasich has claimed the lead in state polling for the first time since August.

A new poll, conducted by FOX News with 806 likely Republican voters from March 5 to 8, has Kasich on top at 34 percent, with real estate tycoon and reality TV star Donald Trump in second at 29 percent. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas takes third at 19 percent, while U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida comes in at 7 percent.

The poll had a margin of error of +/-3.5 percent.

Kasich has been aiming for an Ohio win to give his campaign momentum as the primary race moves into winner-take-all races and has locked down support among the state’s Republican leaders. U.S. Sen. Rob Portman and the state Republican Party have endorsed his run, and Ohio Republican Chair Matt Borges has been one of his biggest boosters.

Kasich’s 5-point lead comes after several months of Trump leading in the state. While the governor initially led in Ohio, after Trump entered the race in June, he overtook Kasich in polling three months later and maintained a lead of about 5 points over Kasich.

The race appeared to be tightening in the past week, with a poll from Public Policy Polling showing Trump’s lead within the margin of error.

The FOX poll found that Kasich has a high approval rating among Ohio Republicans, with 79 percent approving of the job he is doing as governor.
