COAL GROVE — It’s hard to hit a moving target.

The Coal Grove Hornets’ offense stayed on the move and ran past the Rock Hill Redmen 42-14 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Hornets (6-1, 2-0) racked up 377 total yards including 343 on the ground behind the running tandem of Bubba Wood and Boo Woods. Wood had a career-high 189 yards on 23 carries and Woods 74 yards on 11 carries.

Both scored three touchdowns.

“The kids did a good job. We executed. Rock Hill has some skilled kids. They have some kids who can throw and catch the ball. The big thing is we were able to move the ball,” said Hornets’ coach Dave Lucas.

Rock Hill (0-7, 0-2) took the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards capped by Steve Lewis’ 6-yard run and it was 6-0.

But the lead was short-lived.

Coal Grove answered with a long drive that culminated on a 5-yard run by Woods and then Wood kicked the conversion for a 7-6 lead.

The Hornets extended the lead to 14-6 on a 14-yard run by Woods.

Wood had a 1-yard scoring run with 8:48 left in the half to extend the lead to 20-6.

Rock Hill drove to the Hornets’ 21-yard line, but the defense held as Kyle Estep made the stop on a fourth down play.

“That was a big play. Our defense played exceptionally well through the course of the game,” said Lucas.

Coal Grove then drove 79 yards with Wood scoring on a 2-yard run with just 29 seconds left in the half. Alex Bare bootlegged in for the conversion as he split two tacklers for the conversion and a 28-6 halftime lead.

“The line of scrimmage did a nice job. We got off ball and got into our blocks and stayed with them,” said Lucas. “Bubba had a nice game. All our backs ran well. I was pleased with the way we ran the ball.”

The Hornets took the second half kickoff and drove for another touchdown. Woods scored for the third time on a 17-yard run and Wood boomed the extra point for a 35-6 cushion at the 9:56 mark.

Following a punt, Coal Grove got the ball back at the Rock Hill 41. A 14-yard pass from Bare to Bryan Steele on third and 13 kept the drive alive and Wood went the final 16 yards on the next play to make it 42-6 with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Rock Hill scored with 7:11 minutes left on a 2-yard run by Lewis. A 51-yard pass from Will McCollister to Jesse Lane set up the score.

McCollister finished the game 6-of-14 passing for 115 yards and ran six times for 50 yards.
