The Francis Washington Educational Tea is scheduled for Friday at Ohio University Southern.

The event serves as a reception for minority nominees from Ironton High School for a$1,000 scholarship in Washington’s name.

The committee will meet with the five nominees and determine who to award the scholarship to. The winner will be announced at the high school’s graduation, said Bonnie Holmes, co-chair of the Progressive Women’s Civic Club, based in Ironton, which sponsors the event.

The club, organized by Washington in 1954, eventually joined with the national Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the Ohio Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, with the mission to “promote interracial justice, understanding and peace among all people” to raise the standard of the home and “advance the moral, economic, social and religious welfare of the family.”

The reception and tea is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Mains Rotunda of OUS. For more information, call 740-532-1532.
