Last autumn, the Chesapeake branch of Briggs Lawrence County Public Library was proud to host a book signing with the authors of two members of our own community. Chesapeake High School student David M. Lilly and his grandfather, Edwin F. Roble, Jr. had collaborated on their first book of fantasy, “The Swords of Athos.” David’s sister, Kristina M. Lilly, has joined them in completing and publishing a sequel, “The Eighth Sword.” The book is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Roble who passed away in December. Everyone is invited to meet this brother and sister writing team at a reading and book signing at the Chesapeake library at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Copies of the books will be available for purchase.

Adults are invited to relive the fun of their childhoods with “An Old-Fashioned Halloween” at two library locations this week. Learn the history of Halloween, make a paper craft and more at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ironton library and 2 p.m. Friday at the Proctorville library.

If scary movies are more your idea of celebrating Halloween, join us for classic horror movies. On Monday at 6 p.m., the Southern Branch Library will present “The House on Haunted Hill.” The Ironton library will present a “double feature” Thursday. See “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” at 2 p.m. and “The Creature from the Haunted Sea” at 6 p.m.

Two Family History Month programs are scheduled this week. Researchers are invited to discover “The Hidden Half of the Family: Women in Genealogy” at a workshop at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ironton library. Learn how to locate your female ancestors and what the records don’t say. The learn more about the valuable internet resource, Ancestry.com at a 2 p.m. workshop on Tuesday at the Proctorville library.

Everyone interested in learning to crochet as well as those already experienced at the craft is invited to the Crochet Club at the Chesapeake Branch Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Beginners should bring a “G” or “H” hook and yarn. Experienced crafters may bring a current project. For information call (740) 867-3390.

Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join the library’s teen advisory board (TAB). There will be a TAB meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the South Point library. TAB members help the library’s young adult librarian select material, write the teen newsletter and plan programs for teen such as this week’s “Library Spook-tacular.” Teens are invited to the Symmes Valley library at 3 p.m. Wednesday and the Proctorville library at 6 p.m. Thursday for Halloween crafts, treats and games.

The Briggs Library children’s department offers programs for homeschooling families twice a month at two locations. This week’s classes featuring the topic, “Pumpkins,” are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Library in Ironton and repeating at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Southern Branch Library in South Point.
