Previous survey had Trump leading slightly

A new survey of voters shows the presidential race remains tight in Ohio, now that both parties have a presumptive nominee.

A Quinnipiac University survey, taken from June 8-19, showed Democratic former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tied with Republican real estate tycoon and reality TV star Donald Trump, at 40 percent each.

The numbers showed a slight trend away from Trump, when compared to Quinnipiac’s last poll of the state’s voters, taken in May, where Trump led Clinton, 43 to 39 percent.

When third party candidates, Libertarian Gary Johnson and the Green Party’s Jill Stein are added into the mix, Clinton leads Trump 38 to 36 percent, with Johnson at 8 percent and Stein at 3 percent.

Both major party nominees are underwater in terms of favorability, with 59 percent viewing Clinton negatively and 35 percent holding a favorable view, while Trump is viewed negatively by 59 percent of voters, with 32 percent holding a favorable view.

The survey found that 57 percent of voters believe that Clinton is better prepared to be president, compared to 33 percent for Trump. When asked which candidate has higher moral standards, 45 percent of respondents said this applies to Clinton, with 37 percent for Trump. Clinton also fared better, when asked by voters which candidate is more intelligent, beating Trump, 53 to 36 percent.

Trump came in ahead of Clinton when asked by voters which candidate is more trustworthy, 44 to 37 percent, who is more inspiring, 46 to 40 percent and who is a stronger leader 49 to 41 percent.

The survey of 971 voters has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.

Surveys by other polling groups have given Clinton a slight lead, with a May poll by CBS finding her ahead, 44 to 39 percent and in an April poll by Public Policy Polling, holding a lead 45 to 42 percent.
