A late start has cut some participation in the community garden in the south end of Ironton.

The garden started four years ago through the sponsorship of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital to let individuals who don’t have space where they live for a garden to grow produce.

Right now, there are a few garden plots still available.

“It is going OK, but there have been better years,” Carol Allen, of Ironton In Bloom, said. “Some plots are pretty empty. It is late unless they want to put in late corn and beans or put in a fall crop.”

Those who live in the projects or high-rise condos nearby can have a plot at no cost. Otherwise the charge is $20, which includes use of water from four hoses there.

“It is a good deal for anyone who would fancy growing their own gardens and living on a limited budget,” Allen said.

Those wanting to start crops from seed can check out the seeds available at the Briggs Lawrence County Library.

Among those participating is Mended Reeds, whose clients are tending two large plots there.
