Coal Grove Fire Department hosts 8th annual event

COAL GROVE –– Live fire demonstrations were just some of the things community members enjoyed Saturday in the field outside of the Dawson-Bryant Education Administration building for the eighth annual Coal Grove Volunteer Fire Department Fire Safety Day

The event is a way for the department to give back to the community, all while teaching them safety tips on what to do in case of a home fire.

“We tie this in with National Fire Prevention Month,” Coal Grove Fire Chief Jay Sherman said. “Our first program was yesterday (Friday) at Dawson-Bryant Elementary School. We gave all of the students a poster contest, which will be judged by the teachers, and then six winners will receive brand new bikes and helmets, which were donated.”

On Saturday, the festivities kicked off with a safety parade before the fire department had live demonstrations of a stovetop fire, dryer fire, Christmas tree fire and a mock car accident fire, showing the crowd what to do in the event of each.

“This is our way to give back to the community and teach them how to be safe in case of a fire,” Sherman said. “And we have other agencies here giving out tips and materials.”

Besides the Coal Grove Fire Department, also available at the event were the Coal Grove Police Department, Upper Township Volunteer Fire Department, Lawrence County EMS, Air Evac Lifeteam and Patriot Ambulance giving sidewalk CPR demonstrations, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Spectrum Outreach Services, PuroClean Property Damage, Family Medical Centers, Genesis Oxygen and Home Medical Equipment, American Red Cross and Scentsy.

Lunches of hot dogs with all of the fixings, chips, a dessert and drink as well as inflatables for the children were also available and a variety of door prizes were raffled off.

“This event is totally free,” Sherman said. “If it wasn’t for our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to make this happen.”
