Homemakers auction quilt

IRONTON — The Lawrence County Southside Homemakers Club sponsored a Ways and Means queen-sized Bow Tie quilt raffle Dec. 19. The winner of the quilt was Judy Latka, a teacher in the Dawson-Bryant schools.

The quilt was made by Juanita Thomas; the winning ticket was sold by Brenda Hackworth.

The president for 2009 was Dorsey Conwell; the president for 2010 is Kate Boykin.

The homemakers meet 10 a.m.-1 p.m. the second Monday of the month at the Briggs-Lawrence County Public Library main branch in Ironton.

Greenbo to have lovers’ weekend

ARGILLITE, Ky. — Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is offering a romantic getaway Feb. 13-14 at its Jesse Stuart Lodge.

It includes one night’s lodging, a continental breakfast and tickets to see Sandy Harmon’s Kentucky Chautauqua performance of Lily May Ledford Coon Creek Girl (1917-1985) for $58.

Cancer society offers scholarships to young survivors

The Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society is offering $1,000 scholarships to young Ohio cancer survivors entering college for the 2010-11 academic year. 

Applications are now available online at www.cancer.org/ohiogrants.

All applicants must be residents of Ohio, United States citizens, diagnosed with cancer before age 21, under the age of 25 at the time of application, and planning to attend an accredited university or community college in the United States.

This scholarship is not intended for family members or caregivers of cancer survivors.

Ironton native receives promotion

ASHLAND, Ky. — The Fyffe Jones Group has announced the promotion of Brad M. McFann, CPA to partner.

McFann is a 10-year veteran, having joined the company in June of 1999 as a staff accountant.

After two years as a senior accountant, he has recently held a manager accountant position in the Ashland office.

McFann’s performance has been key to the Group’s commitment to client satisfaction, often exceeding their expectations.

The company says the well being of their customer base is critical to the company’s long term success.

He currently specializes in business consulting, tax planning, and compliance for start up businesses and established regional businesses. With the support of six partners in the Tri State area, McFann has the ability to service numerous types of companies in the region.

An Ironton resident, McFann is married to Autumn McFann, also a CPA, employed with King’s Daughters Medical Center as controller. The couple is from Ironton and has one child, Adrian, 2 years old.

Social Security filing assistance available

IRONTON — The preferred method of applying for Social Security disability or retirement benefits is now the internet. You can complete your own application quickly and easily with complete privacy.

If you aren’t feeling comfortable enough to try filing alone, Social Security will have representatives at the computer lab at Workforce Development Center, 123 N. Learn a new language online

ASHLAND, Ky. — Do you want to learn a foreign language, but don’t have the time or money to go back to school? Or maybe you just want to brush up on that high school French?

Boyd County Public Library’s newest online offering is Mango Languages, a free, fun, fast and convenient way to learn.

The online language-learning system focuses on teaching actual conversation skills. Each lesson combines real-life situations and audio from native speakers with an easy-to-follow interface and simple, clear instructions. Because it is completely web-based, patrons can learn anywhere they have an internet connection.

Mango Languages currently offers 12 full language courses — Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Greek, Russian and Mandarin Chinese, as well as ESL for Polish, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Many additional language courses are planned.
