HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Coal Grove Hornets may have had the red eyes due to getting little sleep or just watching Sciotoville East shoot free throws.
The Sciotoville East Tartans used some strong foul shooting to edge the Hornets 53-48 on Saturday in the Huntington Classic.
The key difference in the game had East converter 19-of-28 free throws while the Hornets were just 4-of-8.
“I was pleased with our kids. They played pretty well,” said Hornets’ coach Kevin Vanderhoof.
“We got back around midnight from Gallipolis on Friday night and had to get back up and lave at 9:30 on Saturday. I was afraid we’d have a letdown but our kids stepped up.”
Cory Borders hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Hornets. Aaron Music added 10 points.
Kyle Flannery scored 18, Akia Brown 12 and Drew Lowe 11 for East.
Coal Grove took a 16-13 first quarter lead as Borders hit three 3-pointers.
Borders hit two more 3-pointers and Jaylen McKenzie added another triple in the second quarter but East rallied to take a 30-28 lead.
The Hornets went ahead 36-35 after three quarters but the Tartans came back and hit 8-of-13 from the line in the fourth quarter to get the win.
