SOUTH POINT — Fiesta Salon in the K-Mart Plaza in South Point will offer a good trade to those needing some grooming and also wanting to help others.

During the week of Dec. 5 through Dec. 11, haircuts will be just $6 for men, women and children with a donation of four nonperishable food items.

Vicki Nickell, of Franklin Furnace, was styling Brenda Horan’s hair when she came up with the idea. In conversation, Nickell learned that Horan had quit her job to open up a food pantry, Michael’s Grace Place, to provide food, furniture and clothing to those who need it.

Nickell contacted Fiesta’s corporate headquarters about doing something to help, and she said they were happy to be involved.

“Our company would just like to raise awareness that there are less fortunate in the area,” Nickell said.

No appointment is needed that week, and the hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Michael’s Grace Place is a food pantry and clothing closet located at 801 Solida Road in South Point. Horan said they help anywhere from 200 to 225 families each month and are funded by donations. From the donation of the building to the volunteers who run it, Horan is thankful how everything always works out.

“It is just amazing what God has done,” Horan said.

Horan started Michael’s Grace Place with some direction from above.

“God put it in my heart,” she said. Horan said her son was always helping others, even as young as third grade.

“He always found people who were needy, and would come home saying, ‘So-and-so doesn’t have a coat. So-and-so doesn’t have food.’ It just went from there,” she said. Her son was killed in a car accident 10 years ago. Four years ago, she quit her job at Walmart to start Michael’s Grace Place.

“We have never had to turn anybody away,” she said. “Who dreamed that in four years, it could be this big?”
