Hornets win to secure OVC title, home playoff game

PEDRO — Add another home game to the schedule.
The Coal Grove Hornets took advantage of six Rock Hill turnovers as the Hornets posted a 28-0 win on Friday to clinch the Ohio Valley Conference title outright and earn a home game in the Region 23 Division VI playoffs next Friday.
Coal Grove (9-1, 7-0) should finish third in the region behind Nelsonville-York and Southeastern. The Hornets should host the sixth-place team, probably Sarahsville Shenandoah (8-2) at 7 p.m.
The final computer ratings and official playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday afternoon.
Rock Hill drove to the Hornets’ 36 to start the game but Jordan Case picked off a pass to stop the drive.
The Redmen (4-6, 3-4) then went 52 yards in nine plays capped by Cameron Barnette’s 4-yard run. Brady Floyd’s kick made it 7-0 with 27 seconds on the clock.
The Hornets recovered a fumble at the Coal Grove 37 and Nate Harmon scored seven plays later from 11 yards out. Kyle Sites had a 40-yard run to trigger the drive.
Aaron Music ran for the conversion for an 8-7 lead.
Rock Hill fumbled a punt and Coal Grove got the ball at the 17. After a pair of penalties moved the ball back, Harmon hit Jeb Jones with an 18-yard pass to give the Hornets a 14-7 lead with 2:13 left in the half.
To begin the second half, Coal Grove used seven plays to go 76 yards that included a 56-yard pass to Jones for a first down at the 11. Harmon then hit Jones with a 3-yard scoring pass and Evan Holmes’ kick made it 21-7.
Rock Hill fumbled the ball away at the Hornets’ 49 and Coal Grove was back in business.
Harmon ran 22 yards and then hit Music for 13 yards to the 14. Harmon ran for 8 yards and then hit Jones with a 6-yard scoring strike.
Jones turned in the big game for the Hornets with four receptions for 83 yards and three touchdowns. Harmon was 5-of-10 passing for 96 yards and ran eight times for 29 yards.
Coal Grove had 235 yards rushing with Sites running 10 times for 87yards and Baldwin carried nine times for 75 yards.
Rock Hill had 168 yards rushing with Barnette getting 59 yards on 18 carries. Zak Adkins ran 10 times for 53 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Logan Hankins added 48 yards on six attempts.
