COAL GROVE — The first half belonged to the Coal Grove Lady Hornets. The second half belong to the Fairland Lady Dragons.
In the end, the game belonged to Emily Chapman.
Coal Grove led the Ohio Valley Conference showdown 21-20 at the half, but Chapman took over and scored 17 of her 31 points in the second half including 12 in the pivotal third quarter as Fairland took a 53-40 win on Thursday.
“We lost confidence in the second half and we had too many turnovers. You can’t expect to win that game with 25 turnovers,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“Chapman decided she wasn’t going to let her team lose and took over the game. We just need to rebound from the loss and continue to play. It’s only the fourth game of the year.”
Allie Marshall added 10 points as Fairland (3-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten.
Alexis Hall scored 14 points to pace Coal Grove (3-1, 1-1).
Fairland was only 20-of-53 from the field for 38 percent but Coal Grove was a mere 11-of-46 for 24 percent. The aggressive driving Lady Hornets did get to the foul line and hit 16-of-24 free throws.
Kasey Murphy scored six points as Coal Grove took a 12-6 first quarter lead. Chapman hit a pair of 3-pointers for Fairland’s scoring.
Chapman had eight points and Allie Marshall hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter as the Lady Dragons climbed to within one point at the half.
Hall scored four points and Bailey McKnight had a 3-pointer for the Lady Hornets.
The third quarter as Chapman scored 12 points as just three players scored for Fairland, but the defense held Coal Grove to seven points including Destiny Dolen who was 4-of-6 from the foul line.
Chapman and Marshall had five points each in the fourth quarter and Kelsey Warnock hit a triple as Fairland outscored Coal Grove 17-12.
Emily Compliment scored seven of her nine points for the Lady Hornets while Hall added four.
Fairland plays at home on Saturday in the Big E Classic.
On Monday, Fairland hosts South Point and visits Gallipolis.
