WILLOW WOOD — Symmes Valley coach Chad Coffman can give his team an “A” for effort, he just wished could give them a “W” for the outcome.
The Vikings played well before falling to one of the Southern Ohio Conference favorites as they lost to the Beaver Eastern Eagles 58-48 on Tuesday.
“We had the ball down six points late but we weren’t able to get over the hump,” said Coffman.
“We played really hard, we just made too many mistakes to win. I was proud of how hard we competed and played.”
Brock Carpenter had 12 points and Layken Gothard 11 for the Vikings (6-5, 3-5). Nick Klaiber hit a pair of 3-pointers and added eight points.
Eastern had four players in double figures as Michael Miller and Cody Weaver scored 14 each, Evan Leist had 13 and Noah Gray 11.
The game was tied at 15 after the first quarter as Carpenter scored five points, Jack Leith had four and both Gothard and Hunter Adams hit 3-pointers.
Miller scored seven points for the Eagles.
Eastern took a 31-25 halftime lead as Leist hit a 3-poitner and scored eight points while Gray had a 3-pointer and a foul shot. Klaiber had two foul shots and a 3-pointer for the Vikings.
The Eagles built a 48-34 lead after three quarters as Weaver scored eight points and Gray hit a pair of 3-pointers as he scored seven points.
Klaiber and Gothard both hit 3-pointers again in the third quarter.
The Vikings staged their comeback in the fourth quarter as Carpenter scored six points and Gothard had four.
But the Eagles were 4-of-9 at the line and Miller scored five points to preserve the win.
Symmes Valley will play at New Boston on Friday and then visit St. Joseph on Saturday.
