LAWRENCE COUNTY — Again this year the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District and the U.S. Forestry Service are partnering to make good use of live Christmas trees once the holiday season has passed.

The used trees may be taken to six designated areas where they will be collected and taken to Lake Vesuvius, where they will become fish habitat.

Those six designated areas are: the Lawrence County Fairgrounds on State Route 7 and State Route 243 (use the main entrance across from Romeo’s Pizza); the South Point Village Hall, 408 Second St., (use the vacant lot behind the village hall); the Coal Grove Village Hall on Carlton-Davidson Lane (use the vacant lot behind the building); the vacant lot next to the Hanging Rock Police Department; the vacant Ohio Department of Transportation lot at the junction of U.S. 52 and State Route 141 in Ironton and at the U.S. Forestry Service office, 6518 State Route 93, Pedro.

Signs will be posted at all locations; the area where trees may be discarded at each location will be roped off.

Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District Director Dan Palmer stipulated that only real trees may be discarded — artificial trees may not be dumped at these sites. All decorations must be removed from the tree prior to discarding it.
