Local students headed to state science fair

The regional science fair took place at Rio Grande University on Saturday and 14 students from Lawrence County received “superior” rating and now qualify to go on to the state science fair.

Those receiving “superior” ratings included Allison Plantz, Zoey Schmidt, Leah Shields and Dawson Forbush, of Chesapeake Middle School,  a team project of Caleb Huff and Braxton Slusher, of Dawson-Bryant Middle, Emily Graham, Sebastian Davies, Kia Booth, Hanna Shrout, Katrina Abbott, Colin McKinley and Isabella Burcham, of Fairland High, Cali Ellis, of Fairland West Elementary and a team project of Danielle Jenkins and Madison Williams, of Rock Hill High.

In addition, Burcham, Davies, Abbott, Graham, McKinley, Jenkins and Madison qualified for the Buckeye Science & Engineering Fair, which allows District 14 students to qualify for the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair.

Lawrence County students also received the following awards, in addition to their ratings for their projects:

Danielle Jenkins/Madison Williams – Water Environment Science Award; Sara Lewis (Fairland High School) – Ohio Soybean Bioscience Award; Zoey Schmidt – American Chemical Society – Central Ohio Valley Section Award, second place; Caleb Huff/Braxton Slusher – American Chemical Society – Central Ohio Valley Section Award, third place; Camryn Miller (Rock Hill High School) – Emerging Scientist Award in Chemistry & Materials Science; Katrina Abbott – Emerging Scientist Award in Earth & Biological Sciences; Dawson Forbush – Emerging Scientist Award in Physics; Colin McKinley – Emerging Scientist Award in Physics; Danielle Jenkins/Madison Williams – Emerging Scientist Award in Natural Sciences; Allison Plantz – Emerging Scientist Award in Behavioral & Social Sciences; Allison Plantz – B-WISER Science Camp Scholarship; Leah Shields – B-WISER Science Camp Scholarship; Zoey Schmidt – OTTA CollegeAdvantage 529 Savings Plan Award; and Sebastian Davies – Rio Grande Science Day Scholarship.

Ohio’s science fair, State Science Day, will take place Saturday, May 2 at The Ohio State University in Columbus.
