Lady Tigers go 2-1 at Russell tournament

FLATWOODS, Ky. — It was a busy schedule over the weekend, so the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers got busy.
Ironton played in the Russell Softball Classic and picked up two wins in three games.
The Lady Tigers routed the Russell Lady Red Devils 16-2 in five innings, lost 3-1 to the Lincoln Lady Cardinals and then beat the Scott (W.Va.) Lady Skyhawks 11-4 on Saturday.
“The girls played a great defensive game along with a solid performance from Burton in the circle (against Scott). She pitched well, hitting her spots and striking out nine,” said Ironton coach Missy Fields.
“Schreck continued to use her speed to come up with several slap hits. Demi Sands and Burton worked their pitcher well to bang out several hits. Kenzie Cremeens is getting her confidence back at the plate.”
Against Russell, each team scored two runs in the second inning.
Ironton (7-6) got its runs when Demi Sands walked and Taiya Hamlet and Haylee Stevens singled.
The Lady Tigers erupted for 12 runs in the fourth inning and it was 14-2.
Riley Schreck singled with one out, Kiandra Martin walked and Sophie Caines reached on an error for a run.
Mary Beth Burton was safe on an error, Peighton Rowe singled, Kenzie Cremeens was safe on an error and Sands tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
Hamlet and Stevens walked, Schreck singled again, Martin walked, Caines hit into a fielder’s choice, and Burton, Rowe and Cremeens all singled.
Ironton added two runs in the fifth on doubles by Sands and Hamlet and a single by Schreck.
Schreck went 4-4 with two runs batted in as Ironton had 14 hits.
Burton was 2-4 with three RBI, Peighton Rowe 2-3 and two RBI, Sands 2-3 with a double, triple and two RBI and Hamlet 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
Russell (7-4) was led by Grace Osborn who went 2-2.
In the second game, Lincoln County scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to edge Ironton 3-1.
Lincoln County scored a run in the first and Ironton finally tied the game with a run in the sixth.
Rowe walked, Sands reached on an error and Hamlet had an RBI single.
But Lincoln County got two runs in the bottom of the inning when K Frye singled, A Roberts was hit by a pitch and L. White reached on an error as the runners scored.
Rowe pitched well in the loss. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Only one run was earned.
On Saturday, Ironton got another big win by beating the Scott Lady Skyhawks 11-4.
Burton went the distance for the win as she struck out nine, walked two and gave up eight hits and three earned runs.
Cremeens and Schreck both went 3-4 and Burton 2-4 with a double, triple and four RBI as Ironton had nine hits.
Ironton took a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Hamlet walked, Schreck singled and Martin walked. Hamlet was out trying to score on a wild pitch, but Rylee Vaughn walked and Burton had a two-run double.
The Lady Tigers pushed the lead to 8-0 in the third.
Stevens walked, Schreck singled and Martin walked to load the bases. Two runs scored on an error and Burton cleared the bases with a triple.
Scott County two runs in the fourth on doubles by Kirsten Arthur and Grace Belcher and a missed third strike.
Ironton made it 11-2 with three runs in the fifth when Vaughn and Rowe walked and Cremeens belted a three-run homer.
Arthur singled, Belcher doubled for a run and Kathryn Underwood had an RBI single for two more runs in the sixth.
Ironton hosts Fairland on Monday.
