Free show at Ironton Farmers Market Square

Popular singer/songwriter Rob McNurlin will be playing at the Tuesday Night Concert at the Ironton Market Square. The free outdoor concerts start at 6:30 p.m.

McNurlin was raised in Eastern Kentucky. His musical path began with the hymns in church, the Johnny Cash Show on TV, a harmonica from his grandmother, his parents’ records and a guitar on his ninth Christmas.

He spent his youth studying traditional music and learned hundreds of folk, hillbilly-blues and gospel tunes. After being inspired by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie and Hank Williams, he started writing songs and mixing his original material with the traditional sounds he absorbed living in the hills of Kentucky into a persona he once called “The Last of the Beatnik Cowboys.”

In his three decades in the music industry, McNurlin has toured with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Hot Tuna, had his songs have been covered by Ronnie Elliott among others and used in two award-winning documentaries. He recently relocated to Nashville and has played along side Marty Stuart at the historic Ryman Auditorium.

“The concerts are family-friendly so come early,” said Sam Heighton, executive director of Ironton aLive. “Have dinner at one of Ironton’s fine restaurants and enjoy the evening.”

The Tuesday Night Concert schedule for the next month is the Duane Flescher Orchestra on June 26, no concert on July 3, Larry Whitt and the Blue Eyed Soul on July 10, and The Westwood Troubadours on July 17.
