ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Army beat the Air Force.
The St. Clairsville Red Devils’ used a power running game to knock the air out of the Fairland Dragons’ passing attack in a 34-6 win on Saturday in the Division IV Region 15 quarterfinals.
Brady Kolb ran 27 times for 202 yards and three touchdowns as St. Clairsville stayed unbeaten in 11 games and advanced to play Bloom-Carroll in the regional semifinals next week.
Fairland (6-5) relied of the passing of senior quarterback Joel Lambiotte who didn’t disappoint as he connected on 18-of-33 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown.
However, the Dragons only managed 31 net yards rushing on 23 carries.
Fairland began the game with a 12-play drive that ate five minutes off the clock. But the drive stalled and they missed a 31-yard field goal attempt.
The Red Devils ran eight straight times to set up a 47-yard pass from Dustin Carrothers to Kyle Storer for a touchdown. Jacob Bolyard’s conversion kick made it 7-0.
A Craig Bober interception — he had two on the night — set up St. Clairsville’s next score as Kolb ran 7 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
After a three-and-out, the Red Devils went on their second straight 9-play scoring drive and Kolb finished it off again with a 4-yard run and it was 21-0.
Fairland bounced back to score on a 20-yard pass from Lambiotte to Gavin Hunt with 53 seconds left in the half and it was 21-6.
But St. Clairsville got that score back thanks to a kickoff return by Luke Watt to the 45 and three straight runs by Kolb including a 21-yarder for a touchdown to cap the drive and it was 28-6 at the half.
The Red Devils’ final touchdown came on a 25-yard run by freshman Jacob Jordan in the third quarter.
