JACKSON — The case of an Oak Hill man charged in the death of an Ironton girl is scheduled to go before a Jackson County Grand Jury next month.

Christopher Haines, 29, is facing five charges in connection with the fatal accident on State Route 93 on Dec. 18.

On Dec. 20, he pleaded not guilty in Jackson municipal court to one count of vehicular homicide due to alcohol, one count of vehicular homicide due to recklessly causing the accident and three counts of vehicular assault.

Ten-year-old Angel McGinnis, a student at South Point Elementary, died at Cabell Huntington Hospital the day of the accident where she, her mother, Marsha, and her younger brother, Brice had been taken.

Marsha McGinnis, 29, was stopped in the southbound lane of State Route 93 at the 10-mile marker when the car she was driving was rear-ended by the Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Haines. Her car then skidded left of center where she was struck by a car driven by Deborah Miller of Columbus. Miller was northbound on the highway.

Brice McGinnis was treated and released from the hospital the day of the accident. Marsha McGinnis was admitted to Cabell in good condition and later released. Haines was not injured.

Ohio State Highway Patrol investigators determined Haines was under the influence of drugs, according to a release.

On Dec. 23 Haines filed an affidavit of indigency, which was approved by a judge. He will be eligible for a public defender. He also waived his right to a preliminary hearing in municipal court to determine if there is enough evidence for him to be bound over.

Haines remains in the Jackson County Jail under a $100,000 bond on each count, 10 percent cash or full surety.
